TftE001: Our first podcast!

Kevin, Valli and myself kicked off our very first podcast, Transmissions From The Ether this morning from the beautiful Tribune tower in downtown Oakland! As Kevin says, we're bringin' da funk, but have to go back out for da noise (and some ice).

Podcast Go take a listen

Our first cast was a 10-minute rant about American Idol, Ryan Seacrest and William Shatner's kidney stone. It was interesting to say the least. But this is just the begining as the TFTE crew will yammer about pop-culture subjects far and wide effecting the Bay Area and beyond. And hey, you can talk to us by sending email to transmissionsfromtheether@gmail.com

Wanna subscribe to the podcast?

You can use this URL to manually subscribe in your podcatcher of choice (in iTunes, it's "Advanced/Subscribe to Podcast"), and we should show up in the iTunes Music Store in the next day or two.

Facinating photography

I wanted to let everyone know about a very cool photo exhibit on display at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. The exhibit is titled "After the Ruins, 1906 and 2006: Rephotographing the San Francisco Earthquake and Fire." It's a very facinating look at the city of San Francisco, as Mark Klett and collaborator Michael Lundgren made 50 mostly black-and-white photos that echo images snapped in 1906 by amateur and professional photographers.

Rephotography is something of a cross between photographic archaeology, reconstructive surgery and fine art. Rephotographers take contemporary photos of a subject, such as a hillside or mansion, once captured in an old photograph, then add their own artistic touch. Past and present works are displayed side-by-side in the show which opened last month and remains on view through June 4.

Show some love

Fellas, if you haven't already done so today, hug your wife or girlfriend. Us guys can be a pain in the royal ass sometimes...so make sure you show your woman you appreciate her.

Pixelism...

Soulcookie.com has been flashing photos from his fancy new camera around the office lately and recently showed me a set from an art opening Palo Alto. Let me stress, most of his photos will catch your eye, but these not only look good, they leave you amazed at the art behind the art.

The opening was held in a coffee shop and displayed the work of Zak Akin. My initial reaction was the art on the walls seemed pixelated. Most in the digital world know pixelation comes from expanding images beyond their size. But as Kevin, a.k.a. Soulcookie explained, Zak is taking a blank canvas and painting it pixel by pixel. So the blur I see in the photos reflects a real painting of a pixelated image. Crazy huh!

Want to hear something more crazy, he did a self-portrait in pez. Needless to say, I'm taking my butt over to Palo Alto to check out his work.

Vote for DJ Santana

As we enter the New Year, I need everyone who reads this blog to do me a small favor. As most of you know by looking at my site Dougvansant.com, I'm a big fan of electronic music and the dance music world. I've been writing about nightlife and DJs for about 4 years now and immersed myself into the club world of South Florida and now San Francisco. Part of this passion is following the rankings of these DJs and clubs worldwide and understanding how important it is to garner "Top 10" status.

If you’re curious, the No. 1 DJ in the world right now is Paul van Dyk, followed by Tiesto and Armin van Buuren. These high rankings allow DJs to leverage tons of money for gigs and attract record labels and movie producers for all sorts of recording opportunities. Paul Oakenfold is one of the most famous because of his ability to use his rankings to rape the dance music world and create songs for soundtracks all over Hollywood.

Anyhow, my good friend Paul Santana is a highly talented DJ in Tampa. You can check him out at DJsantana.com or listen to him 24-hours a day at DJsantanaradio.com. His style is heavy trance, but he throws in some breaks and house from time to time. His shows are some of the best in the Tampa Bay area and he is quickly gathering acclaim from around the southeast.

The DJ List
I'd like to see Paul get moved up the DJ rankings and help this talented artist get more attention around the US and around the world. So I'm asking you all to go visit The DJ List.com and vote for DJ Santana.

You'll have to register with the site to vote, but they hardly send emails and never pass along your address to third parties. The only reason for registration is to understand the global demographics of users on this site.

This list isn't the only list out there that ranks DJs world-wide, but its great publicity for any aspiring DJ in the dance music world. So vote for Santana and help us make Paul Santana one of the top in the dance music world!
