Facinating photography

I wanted to let everyone know about a very cool photo exhibit on display at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. The exhibit is titled "After the Ruins, 1906 and 2006: Rephotographing the San Francisco Earthquake and Fire." It's a very facinating look at the city of San Francisco, as Mark Klett and collaborator Michael Lundgren made 50 mostly black-and-white photos that echo images snapped in 1906 by amateur and professional photographers.

Rephotography is something of a cross between photographic archaeology, reconstructive surgery and fine art. Rephotographers take contemporary photos of a subject, such as a hillside or mansion, once captured in an old photograph, then add their own artistic touch. Past and present works are displayed side-by-side in the show which opened last month and remains on view through June 4.

...never knew this sort of thing had a name...rephotography. A continuing interest of mine, recreating where the photographer of long ago stood, to produce then and now shots particularly of battlefields or other historic sites. I've often thought the fire and earthquake scenes were a fertile area for such an effort. Thank you for making me aware of it.
